WSS 3.0 export to Excel (2003) – Multi value lookups won’t export

leave a comment »

We are running WSS 3.0 (aka Sharepoint 2007) and are currently tied by corporate standards to Microsoft Office 2003 on the desktop so export to Excel uses Excel 2003.  Mostly this works but recently a user reported that when he exports a list some fields do not export.  There’s no error messages, warnings or other messages, they just don’t appear in the exported spreadsheet.  The one thing that these fields all have in common is that they are ‘People and Group’ type and allow multiple values to be selected.

To test the hypothesis that it might be either the type of the column or the fact that the cells could have multiple values I created a test list with a plain text field, number field, choice field, ‘People and Group’ (single value) field, ‘People and Group’ (multi value) field, Lookup (single value) field and Lookup (multivalue) field.  I added some data and tried an export.  All fields exported except for the two multivalue fields.

I did some web research but only found references to multivalue fields being exportable.  The references, however, seemed to refer to using Excel 2007 (where they specified the version at all).

I’ve posted questionas about this to EggHeadCafe and Microsoft Technet.

I did find one post about this problem (though they were running MOSS 2007).  They confirm that the problem only appears with Sharepoint 2007 and Excel 2003.  If they use Excel 2007 they don’t get the problem.
