Searching list on ID column does not pick up some items

On one of our sites the users reported that when they search a couple of the lists (Risk log and Issue log) on the ID of items they don’t get any results for some IDs.  The items exist and there’s no apparent reason for those items not to appear, as other items do.

I asked a question about this on the Microsoft Sharepoint forums and have had a reply.  I also did some research on the web.  The reply confirmed my research that it might be something to do with the crawler and resulting indexes.  I’ve emailed the company that hosts our Sharepoint servers to ask them to check the crawler logs and advise us of any errors.  I also asked them to run a full crawl so we could see if that fixed the indexes.

[Edit To Add:  Hosting company say they have another customer witht he same problem and lookslike they’re going to have to rebuild the search database]
